The book of Magna Nova finally set free

In 2014 I acquired a new sketchpad and it’s name was Magna Nova. I always name my sketch pads as it helps me remember where pictures are and feel more attached to them on a deeper level. Magna and I got on very well during the first few months of our relationship and formed a good partnership together forming images and experimenting with techniques. Sadly we never had such a deep connection as I have had with other books in part due to Magna’s poor paper quality and my lack of dedication, and sadly I only ever drew in it very occasionally. All the drawings remained unfinished and things were not looking good for us. In 2017 our relationship ended completely and Magna remained in stasis in the the great library of the Sidemuncher institute. 2021 the book communicated with me again through dreams, we had to finish what we started. It had a desire and I had to act on it, setting Magna free from incompletion. Magna was removed from the archives by trained librarians and sent to the research labs for further work. For 3 weeks I went through pictures from the ones that needed the least amount of work to the ones that needed the most amount of work, finishing them one by one and discarding dull or shitty drawings and relegating them to scrap paper. This task was initially very dull as it felt like I was going backwards with my drawing as I quite literally was going back in time with my ideas. As i progressed through I began to really enjoy this work with Magna as I realised i had lost something from the Sidemuncher style that Magna wanted me to rediscover. Magna reminded me of my inspirations many years ago and I’m grateful for that, now I will use Magna’s Ideas in my future work. Magna was set free from incompletion and I was free to move on to new projects. Check out the selection below of the black white drawings from Magna Nova in chronological order.

Cow-Section. started 2014. Cow-section is a sequel picture to Croc-section. During the time of Magna Nova Sidemuncher was obsessed with sequel pictures. Probably due to not enough raw new inspiration.

Deer Smoking. Started 2017. This drawing is actually a prequel to my DMT deer picture. Easily the favourite of the bunch with Sidemuncher engineers.

Ice cream princess plant. started 2018. this was but a seedling of a pencil drawing when it was rediscovered. What was pencil had to be lined in pen, that was the only rule.

There were more Magna Novian images but they were done in colour so they were not included in this presentation.
